Stocking a New Pond
The best way to stock a new pond is to build your forage species first, such as bluegills and fathead minnows. Wait until the second year to stock the predator species. In the second year stock your predator species such as largemouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch. In a new pond these predator species should be stocked at a small size.
Stocking an Existing Pond or Lake
As stated above, to stock the new pond you can use small sizes of fish. This does not work in an existing pond or lake. Usually the most economical size of a largemouth bass is 8 to 10 inches. This is because largemouth bass smaller than 7 inches will be more likely to end up as food. They will spend more time fleeing from larger fish and less time on growth.
